An American Tragedy

Chamber OrchestraAn American TragedyThis compact orchestral work evokes the fateful scene on Big Bittern Lake in Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy.

Sylvan Spirits

Lyric Soprano and Chamber OrchestraSylvan SpiritsSylvan Spirits draws attention to global deforestation by capturing the woods’ haunting, mystical beauty through three poetic settings. Anne Brontë’s lighthearted “Lines Composed in a Wood on a Windy Day” gives way to the somber atmosphere of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Way Through the Woods,” and the work closes in mystery with Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Alternate versions for baritone and orchestra or narrator and orchestra are available upon request.

Two Miniatures

Symphony OrchestraTwo MiniaturesWritten for a children’s concert in spring 2015, these two concise orchestral movements offer an inviting introduction to the ensemble. The second miniature playfully incorporates the famous opening theme from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

The Wind in the Willows

Symphony OrchestraThe Wind in the WillowsThis programmatic work brings Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows to life. Four opening sections—“Spring Cleaning,” “The River,” “Toad Hall,” and “Wild Wood”—introduce distinct character and location themes, each threaded with a recurring horn motive. The themes converge in “The Fight for Toad Hall” before the work closes with Toad’s triumphant victory banquet.
