Commissioned and premiered by the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band at Jazz at Lincoln Center on March 16, 2015, Maelstrom depicts a ship caught in a powerful whirlpool. Calm breaking waves escalate into a violent struggle as the vortex gathers strength; the tempest eventually subsides, leaving the ship’s fate unresolved.
