Commissioned by the American Tuba Quartet, Negative Space blends classical craft with jazz and popular influences in a three-movement work that is both demanding and engaging. A buoyant, syncopated opening in E-flat major gives way to a melancholy D-flat waltz colored by chromatic harmony. The finale combines motives from both movements in an energetic F-major scherzo, punctuated by chorales and a fugato on its way to a climactic finish.
